RV Motor Home Travel Tips

This article on RV motor home travel tips focuses on helping the RV camper undertake a safe tip. There are also some tips on how to save for the budget conscious traveler. Whichever way you look at it, RV travel is one of the most economical and flexible of all modes of travel and making the journey safely is important for all concerned.

Before you set out in your RV motor home, make sure that you know all the emergency points along your route, which include hospitals and tornado shelters. You should know your route thoroughly and that includes the high spots along it.

When you take your RV motor home on the road, you need to take certain safety measures essential to keeping yourself and family safe. The responsible thing to do is take the time to read through and follow the travel safety tips covered in this article, which include but are not limited to:

Security of your RV motorhome in terms of locks and security camera installation; checking and replacement of all belts, hoses especially radiator hoses, headlights, tires, turn signals, hitch and towing equipment (if any). You should clean the cooking vent hood of all grease buildup to prevent fires and make sure fire extinguishers are up to date and alarm systems work. Make sure your insurance cover is fully paid up and up to date. Leave a full travel itinerary with at least 2 relatives or friends.

Carry all of your essential contact numbers and don’t forget your mobile phone charger. Make sure you take your insurance details and contact information with you.

You need to keep the following tools handy for emergency situations: flashlights, towing cables, jumper cables, road flares, screwdrivers, wrench, pliers, duct tape, tire pressure gauge and tire repair kit including flat repair spray.

Avoid taking along an overloaded RV motor home; it is the cause of most accidents. The excess weight causes an inequality in the balance of the rig; it also causes problems with steering, braking and increases fuel consumption. Sudden blowouts and breakdowns are common symptoms of an overloaded RV. Make sure that all of your cargo is secure in and outside the RV; anything that is loose is a potential safety hazard.

Once you get your RV motor home on the road, you need to be a responsible driver, adhere to speed limits and wear your seat belt.

In stormy weather you need to get off the road and park in a sheltered area. Avoid trees and power lines, they could fall on your RV motor home and cause serious damage. If lightening is about, the safest place for you is inside the RV. If it’s a tornado warning, get to the nearest tornado shelter or park under a bridge overpass or even get into a ditch. Do not park in areas that have flash flood warning signs.

For those of you on a budget, staying at full service RV parks can come expensive. Choose instead to stay at parks where the electrical hookups and facilities meet basic requirements. State parks and recreation areas offer very low nightly rates but there’s not much to be had beyond the basic hookup.
